Halloween Party

The annual Halloween Party sponsored by the Letcher Community Club was held on October 31st at the Letcher Community Center. There were games and costume judging, along with a haunted house.

The Horizons Good Stuff Committee sponsored the “Good Stuff Store” and remaining food items were donated to the Sanborn County Food Pantry.

The dedication for the “Wind for Schools” project was held on Wednesday, October 29th at the Sanborn Central School in Forestburg.

 Ground Breaking

The dedication of South Dakota’s first “Wind for Schools” project will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29th, with the official program at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanborn Central School in Forestburg.

Students, faculty, and community members are welcome to attend the dedication of the Skystream Model 3.7 residential wind turbine, which is on a 45-foot tower.

The “Wind for Schools” project goals are to engage rural school teachers and students in wind energy, to educate college students in wind energy applications, and to introduce wind energy to rural communities to initiate discussion of wind energy benefits and challenges.

Annual Halloween Party

The Letcher Community Club will sponsor the annual Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st at the Letcher Community Center. Games will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Costume judging will take place at 7:00 p.m. They will sell a slice of pizza and a pop for $2. Families are asked to donate a cake for the cake walk. For more information contact Missy Hoffman at 999-2249.

A haunted house will be held in the new building at Rossy Park from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be no charge for admission to the haunted house.

Weekend Day Care

If you are in need of day care on the weekends give Lynell Jessen in Letcher a call at 770-5440.

She will be doing day care on Saturdays until 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays until 6:00 p.m.

Rest Rooms at Letcher Park

Much progress has been made on the rest rooms that are being built at the Letcher Park.

The Horizons III Project

SDSU Cooperative Extension Service in partnership with the Northwest Area Foundation is beginning the third round of the Horizons project in South Dakota.

15 communities have been chosen to participate in Horizons III including:

Big Stone City, Box Elder, Eden/Roslyn, Flandreau, Gregory, Gayville/Volin, Greater Big Stone Lake area, which includes the towns of Corona, Wilmot, and lake residents, Harding County, Hill City, Hyde County, Kadoka, Kimball, Leola, and Reliance. In addition, a site on the Rosebud Indian Reservation will be part of the project.

The project’s aim is to reduce poverty and develop leadership in small rural communities in the upper Midwest. The communities selected have populations of 5,000 or less, and a poverty rate of 10 percent or more.

Fall Clean Up

 Cleaning Up

A fall clean up was held in Letcher on Saturday, September 6th. Volunteers hauled away piles of branches and put sealer on the new playground equipment at the Letcher Park. Lunch was served at the Letcher Community Center. Community members also took advantage of Dumpster Days sponsored by the Letcher Community Club.

Playground equipment has been installed at the park in Letcher. Volunteers showed up bright and early on Saturday, August 23rd to assemble the equipment and a picnic lunch was enjoyed at the park.
