Parade of Lights

The Parade of Lights in Mitchell drew thousands of spectators. It is considered the unofficial start to the holiday season and is now in its sixth year. The Letcher Fire Department was among the 53 entries in the parade. They were awarded second place for Best Use of Lights for the Letcher Fire Truck.

Snowmen

December 7th - American Cancer Society’s Tour of Homes. Tickets can be purchased at the Letcher Community Center.

December 7th - Craft Open House/Bake Sale at Sally Olson’s in Letcher.

December 13th - Santa will be visiting at the Letcher Community Center starting at 10:00 a.m.

December 13th - Turkey Bingo at the Letcher Community Center. Kick off at 6:00 p.m. with BBQs and pie.

Nominated for Sr. Volunteer of the Year

Horizons member Mary Luckett has been nominated for the American Legion Unit Community Service 2009 Senior Volunteer of the Year for all her hard work and dedication throughout the year with the flowers in the Letcher community. Congratulations, Mary!

American Education Week

The National Education Association’s 87th annual American Education Week is November 16th to November 22nd. This presents all Americans with an opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring every child receives a quality education. The American Education Week tagline, “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility,” reflects the National Education Association’s vision of calling upon all Americans to do their part in making public schools great for every child so that they can grow and achieve in the 21st Century.

The week-long celebration will spotlight distinguished individuals who are critical in building great public schools for the nation’s 50 million K-12 students.

American Education Week will be celebrated at Sanborn Central School by designating each day during the week to honor various participants in education. 

  • Monday - Administration Day
  • Tuesday - Support Staff Day
  • Wednesday - Teacher Day
  • Thursday - Community Day
  • Friday - Student Day

On Friday, all students may wear their pajamas to school. Roll out of bed and get an education. Students will also enjoy a movie and treats.

For Community Day, students, staff, parents, and community members are being asked to share a “thank you” with the communities for their help and involvement with education in the Sanborn Central School District. A thank you or a positive comment can be added by clicking on “Comments” in the bottom right hand corner of this post.

Halloween Party

The annual Halloween Party sponsored by the Letcher Community Club was held on October 31st at the Letcher Community Center. There were games and costume judging, along with a haunted house.

The Horizons Good Stuff Committee sponsored the “Good Stuff Store” and remaining food items were donated to the Sanborn County Food Pantry.

Wind for Schools Dedication

 Ground Breaking

The dedication of South Dakota’s first “Wind for Schools” project will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29th, with the official program at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanborn Central School in Forestburg.

Students, faculty, and community members are welcome to attend the dedication of the Skystream Model 3.7 residential wind turbine, which is on a 45-foot tower.

The “Wind for Schools” project goals are to engage rural school teachers and students in wind energy, to educate college students in wind energy applications, and to introduce wind energy to rural communities to initiate discussion of wind energy benefits and challenges.

Annual Halloween Party

The Letcher Community Club will sponsor the annual Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st at the Letcher Community Center. Games will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Costume judging will take place at 7:00 p.m. They will sell a slice of pizza and a pop for $2. Families are asked to donate a cake for the cake walk. For more information contact Missy Hoffman at 999-2249.

A haunted house will be held in the new building at Rossy Park from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be no charge for admission to the haunted house.

She will be doing day care on Saturdays until 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays until 6:00 p.m.
