Taking Action on Poverty

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Here are the February blog questions regarding Category 3: Taking action on poverty:

What kinds of concrete steps are being taken by your community to address poverty?

One of the goals from Sanborn Central’s Strategic Plan that addresses the issue of poverty is the “Good Stuff Committee,” which was formed to help families and individuals in need.

How did your community make choices about the actions most likely to have an impact on poverty?

By realizing that poverty isn’t always just a monetary issue and that it can take on many different forms. Goals and objectives were made in the Strategic Plan to address the different forms of poverty that exist in our communities.

How are low income involved?

Everyone is invited to participate in the Horizons program. We have had a diverse group of participants in our Horizons program, including single parents and the elderly.

How does your plan for poverty reduction link with existing leaders, groups and organizations?

The Horizons group has partnered with different organizations in the three communities to accomplish the goals set in the Strategic Plan. For example, a benefit was held with the help of Thrivent Financial of Sanborn County. On other projects Horizons has collaborated with the Forestburg Community Development Corporation, the Senior Citizens, the Letcher Community Club, the Sanborn Central School, and the local 4-H clubs.

What other partnership will help your community carry out its poverty reduction plan?

Partnering with the local town boards and the Sanborn County Commissioners will also help Horizons II carry out its plan.
