A dedicated group of community members met to develop goals for our communities. After considering the ideas that had been discussed during study circles and Leadership Plenty training, the group created the following goals.
Sanborn Central Goals
The next step will be to complete the objectives that will lead the way to completion of our goals.
The Horizons Community Strategic Planning Team makes a commitment to stay active in the life of Sanborn Central Communities through the implementation of the plan. We will do this by making the most out of the skills and talents of our residents to make changes for better communities. Utilizing our communities’ human assets and natural resources will have the greatest pay off for our future. We will do this by inviting community members to engage in community-wide improvement activities. While completing these goals, we will be inclusive and respectful of the diverse needs of our individual communities and opinions among community members. Finally, we will focus our energy toward the completion of our goals.
Vision For Sanborn Central Communities
(Artesian, Forestburg and Letcher, SD)
Sanborn Central Communities will work together and enjoy the successes of bringing new life back to our communities. People will want to live and work in our progressive, attractive, and friendly communities.
The communities will have asphalt paved streets. The homes along these streets will be repaired and repainted to improve the standard of life in these communities. Yards and street right of ways will be cleaned and well maintained to create an attractive and inviting place for people to come home to. Each community will have areas of new housing and low income living facilities for the elderly and disabled citizens.
New businesses and industries will fill the need for more jobs, and a greater need for employees to fill these jobs will result in increased population which will create other needs. All infrastructures will be updated to accommodate the increasing population. Water systems and power supplies to the communities will be upgraded to handle the needs of the community’s growth. There will be playgrounds for the children and community activities for all ages.
When approaching the Sanborn Central School, people will be welcomed by the sign and lighted flag by the driveway. If they are coming to enjoy the sporting events or the concerts and plays held in the school, people will be comfortably seated in our air conditioned school. Disabled and elderly people will have a seating area that is easily accessible and comfortable.
Intuit provides accounting software such as QuickBooks and Quicken. By going to www.jumpup.intuit.com, you will find tips for entrepreneurs and small businesses, tools for business planning, and other resources.
One really nice feature is a free download of a slimmed down version of Quickbooks for businesses. There is no expiration date. When you are ready for the full version, your existing data is integrated into the full version.
There are also a newsletter and forum.

Study Circles were held throughout the communities last fall and winter. Leadership Plenty training was held in April and May, 2007.
We consist of three small communities: Artesian, Forestburg and Letcher. These communities have joined together to form Sanborn Central School, located at Forestburg.
The hard work and dedication from so many people of all ages, planning and donating their time, money, skills and resources, made this wonderful new facility a reality. All three communities are very proud of this accomplishment.
Instead of operating and maintaining two older school buildings, the new centrally located facility has cut expenses and improved the conditions for the development and education of our students.
This is a good example of what three communities can accomplish when they combine their skills and resources to achieve their goals.
Everyone attending the Blogger Training at the Mitchell Technical Institute enjoyed the opportunity and presentation by Martha Landes and Cheryl Jacobs, SDSU Extension-Horizons coordinators.
All of you in the Sanborn Central Horizons II group as well as other people will be given the opportunity to comment to our postings. We hope that our community members will become active as bloggers and perhaps even editors as we join forces to more fully develop our communities and resources.
