Study Circle “Clean Up, Spruce Up Project Goal”
Keith Senska and Margo Edwards, Chairmen

June - October 2007

The following clubs, individuals and organizations helped to make the “Clean Up, Spruce Up Project” a success and helped to make the 4-H Building and Grounds at Forestburg, S.D. cleaner, organized cupboards, new equipment and a safer place to be. The outside projects suggested for completion were the removal of the BBQ pit, landscape improvements on the north side of the building and general clean up.

Sanborn County Thrivent Financial became one of the partners in this project.
They provided the funds for refreshments and the noon lunch, purchased kitchen towels and dish cloths and a slow cooker for the kitchen inventory. Workers were also present on the work day to provide assistance in projects. This joint venture was a success with the help of 12 Sanborn County Thrivent Financial Members and 3 Horizon members.

Sanborn County 4-H Leaders Association
At the Associations April Meeting, a presentation asked for assistance in completing part of the necessary tasks for this project. The leaders brought this information back to their club meetings and volunteer assigned duties were given. The Association purchased 2 new garbage containers (plastic) to be used in the kitchen. A donation was given for the Outside 4-H Building Sign Project.

Sanborn County 4-H Clubs:
Butler Boosters 4-H Club: Painted 2 bathrooms and stalls. Cleaning the 4-H flag and 2 - 4-H banners that hung in the 4-H Building was also a project for this club. A new S.D. flag has been purchased by this 4-H club also for the 4-H Building. (2 adults, 3 4-H youth).

Kick N Kids and Country Kids 4-H Clubs: Cleaned walls in the main dining room. (4 workers helped)

Town N Kountry Kids 4-H Club: Cleaned walls, windows, cupboards in the kitchen. Plastic window covering was taken down and cleaned. All the cupboard drawers were cleaned and organized. Drawers were rearranged and labels were placed on outside to denote what was in the drawers for convenience. Refrigerator and freezer were also defrosted and cleaned.(5 adults and 5 - 4-H members). A new U.S. Flag has been purchased as a result of a fundraiser.

Sanborn County Commissioners:
The Commissioners made the motion that the outside cement BBQ pit was a hazard to the public, in July the Highway Department crew demolished the pit and removed the rubble. Three new big roasters were also purchased for the kitchen to be used for the public events. (5 Commissioners and 6 highway department workers)

Sanborn County 4-H Grounds Janitor:
repaired the floor underneath the sinks in the kitchen and put new covering on the boards. (1 adult)

Horizon II project “Clean Up, Spruce Up” Day (July 8).
A noon lunch was served by Sanborn County Thrivent Financial. They also provided cleaning supplies for the afternoon cleaning of walls, trophy cases and windows. Flags and banners were cleaned. Two flags have been replaced.
(10 adults helped). It was decided that an additional date will be needed to complete the remainder of the walls in the 4-H Building.

Outside Sign for 4-H Building Project (October 2)
A new sign for the outside of the 4-H building has been ordered and will be installed later this month. A Fundraiser has been established for this fund. Paint ~ South Dakota Program for Private Residences

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Campaign Requirements

1. The Nominee must own and currently live in the home to be painted. It cannot be a business, rental house, contain rental units or property used for other purposes besides a primary residence.

2. The Nominee must need their home repainted and would otherwise not be able to paint the house on their own due to financial or physical difficulty.

How does the Campaign work?
The volunteer group nominates the home of someone in the community. Paint and primer are purchased by the volunteer organization or can be billed directly to SDHDA. When the work is completed, receipts or invoices, photos of the finished project and the signed Lead Based Paint waivers must be returned to the SDHDA office. The paint and primer cost is then reimbursed to the organization or paid directly to the merchant.

What does the Campaign pay for?
The Paint-South Dakota Campaign will pay for paint and primer only. The volunteer group is responsible for supplies such as caulk, scrapers, ladders, brushes, buckets, etc.

Many groups discuss their plan and the Program with individuals and businesses within their community. Many other individuals, groups or businesses are willing to donate or contribute in other ways to the painting project. In addition to supplies being furnished, you may ask local donators for food, beverages, and t-shirts as they are all useful during the project.

WiFi Hotspot—Drawing Travelers in from the Highway!

Friday, October 12th, 2007

A WiFi hotspot (Internet availability for laptops and notebooks) in your local cafe, convenience store, or community center may increase the customer base for your local businesses.  Many of the users will be business people who may be impressed with your community.  By visiting briefly with them, you may find may a source for new ideas or an information source for what worked to develop their community.

Some WiFi hotspots are free but others charge a connection fee which helps pay for the monthly cost of the Internet from the ISP and even may be a small source of revenue.  You can be creative in pricing so that students and local people may have a low fee if any.

The costs locally for a WiFi hotspot are less than $500 at this time.   You may have a local tech person who can greatly reduce the cost.

Different sites on the Internet list the location of  hotspots across the United States.  Travelers may plan to visit your site.
